The Cambridge Mite Coyotes had a successful weekend at the Annual Niagara Falls Teddy Bear Fastball Tournament.
Our first game on Friday night against The Halton Hills Hawks ended with a Cambridge Victory with score of 7-2.
Saturday was going to be very busy with three teams to challenge us.
Our 1st game on Saturday morning was against Cobourg. The Cambridge bats came alive in the 15-0 victory. Alex Pereira almost completed the cycle with a Home Run, a Triple and a Double. A home run by MacKenzie Berry, and singles by Avery Lomax, Brooke Cameron, and Alexis Joseph rounded out our offence. Pitching was definitely a strong point with great performances from Rayven Buchanan, and Brooke Cameron.
Our second game that day was against our Grand Valley rivals, the Guelph Gators. We had strong performances, Defensively and Offensively. With determination and resolve we chipped away at some very strong Gator Pitching. It was strong defensive plays by our infield that were the highlight of the game. Rayven Buchanan on short with MacKenzie Berry on first. Chelsea Sloan, and Taylor Vicente alternating on 2nd base proved very formidable to the Guelph offence. In the end, however, Guelph bested us by a score of 9-8
Our last game on Saturday was against Lasalle. This very strong team from just outside of Windsor, proved to be a tremendous challenge for our team this late in the day. Fighting back the fatigue, and in true Coyote fashion we stuck with them inning after inning eventually falling to Lasalle by a score of 8-6
Based on our results in the tournament we were solidly in 3rd place.
Our 1st game on Sunday was against the Gators again
Patience at the plate proved to be our strong point with Chelsea, Avery, Taylor, Madison Maher, and Lauren Dottori all working the count and making it to base. With singles by Alex, MacKenzie, Bella Pereira, and Kelly Tikel we easily cashed in runs. However as is often the case with the Gators, they fought hard, leading for most of the game. At time limit, the score was tied requiring us to go into an extra inning in an International Tie-Breaker. With Alexis, Chelsea, and Taylor on base, Alex Pereira's home run gave us a score of 10-6. Pitcher MacKenzie Berry, faced Guelph in the bottom of the inning, walking 2 batters and allowing 1 single hit, she struck out 3 batters to win the game by a final score of 10-6
This sent us into the Gold Medal Game against Lasalle who had beaten Halton Hills Hawks earlier that day for their shot to Gold.It was definitely a pitchers duel for 2 very tired teams.
Lasalle was held scoreless for the 1st three innings, allowing Cambridge to chip away. Avery Lomax had a double and a single. Brooke, Kelly, Alexis, Bella all contributed with singles, but it was MacKenzie's 3 run Homer that had the Coyotes tasting Gold. Defensively we were flawless until the 4th inning but it wasn't enough for Lasalle to over-take us.
Cambridge Coyotes take Gold by a score of 7-5. a true testament to the strength, determination of one of the finest teams I've ever coached
