Novice Blue Win Silver in Niagara PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 July 2013 05:37

July 5, 6, 7 the Coyotes headed to Niagara Falls trying for a gold for the 3rd year in a row.  With 12 teams in the Novice division we were slated to play a team from Western New York on Friday night.  The team from NY turned out to be one of the best teams that we have faced all season and capitalized on our lack of bats early in the game.  Jumping ahead to a 5-0 lead we made some adjustments and slowed them down but were unable to regain much needed ground with the game finishing up 5-1.  "Well team, this is a bit of a jackpot - in order to continue through to Sunday we must win all 3 games on Saturday or we will be packing our bags."  Saturday morning we won a tight game vs Mississauga 1-0.  It was a well played game by both sides.  Later Saturday morning, we won again vs Kitchener 6-3, and finally faced off against Palmerston in a winner moves on game vs Palmerston.  We battled back and forth and were stuck at 3-3 when the bats finally awoke in the last inning for the Coyotes who put a string of hits together to land 7 runs capping the game at 10-3 and giving us the 2nd place finish that we needed to advance to the semi-finals.  Sunday morning we faced off against the A pool 1st place team from Halton Hills who had not lost a game all weekend.......yet.  The bats were still lively and we jumped ahead early.  Halton fought back and tied the game at 5-5.  Cambridge bats struck one last time in the final inning with a timely hit that cashed 2 more runners and that's where the score settled at 7-5 Cambridge.  On to the gold medal game vs NY again.  This time armed with a little knowledge, Cambridge jumped ahead 2-0 early in the game and in a seesaw match we found ourselves tied 4-4.  Where we were unable to push our go ahead runner across the plate, NY succeeded.  Plating one more run in the final inning of the game NY took the game and the gold medal 5-4.  A silver medal earned by Cambridge, and some really great ball played by everyone.
